Rank ReasonsAgrimonia gryposepala is a perennial herb occurring in forest edges, open spaces, thickets, marshes, bogs, wet meadows, wet forests, and in deciduous or mixed pine-deciduous woods of most of the mountains of the western United States, Mexico, and Guatemala, though populations are widely scattered. There are over 1,000 estimated occurrences of this species range-wide, which are threatened by over-harvest, clearing of woodlots and forests, grazing, habitat fragmentation, deer browse, invasive species, altered hydrology of wetland habitat, and development. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and high number of occurrences, Agrimonia gryposepala is considered secure.
Range Extent CommentsAgrimonia gryposepala occurs in most of North America, from British Columbia east to Nova Scotia, Canada (but not in Alberta or Saskatchewan), and in most of the United States, except for the Great Basin, Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, and Florida (FNA 2014, NatureServe 2024). It also occurs from Mexico south to Central America (FNA 2014). Range extent was estimated to be over 12.3 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences CommentsBy applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be over 1,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact CommentsAgrimonia gryposepala is used medicinally and is potentially threatened by over-harvest (Wyoming Natural Heritage Program 2003). Additional potential threats to this species and/or its habitats include clearing of woodlots and forests, grazing in wood lots, riverbank clearing, fragmentation of habitat (Punter, pers. comm., 2000), increasing deer population, competition by invasives, conversion of bogs to wet meadows (Fertig, pers. comm., 2000), and development.
