Taxonomic Comments
Flora of North America Editorial Committee (vol. 8, 2009) elevates Sarracenia rubra ssp. jonesii to full species as S. jonesii and transfers S. rubra ssp. alabamensis (= S. alabamensis ssp. alabamensis) and S. rubra ssp. wherryi (= S. alabamensis ssp. wherryi) to S. alabamensis. FNA (vol 8, 2009) recognized two subspecies in S. rubra, ssp. gulfensis, and ssp. rubra. Rice (2018) also recognizes this concept of S. rubra and recognizes S. rubra, ssp. gulfensis, and ssp. rubra, and additionally describes a third subspecies, S. rubra ssp. viatorum. Weakley (2020, Oct. draft) accepts this new subspecies and indicates that his treatment of ssp. gulfensis and ssp. rubra are the same as those accepted in FNA (2009).
