Rank Reasons
Silene caroliniana is a perennial forb occurring on rocky or gravelly soils in open and calcareous woodlands of eastern North America from New Hampshire south to Georgia and west to Alabama, Kansas and Missouri, and north to Ohio in the United States. There are over 600 occurrences of this species, which are threatened by development, deer herbivory, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, succession and other threats in some places. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and high number of occurrences, Silene caroliniana is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Silene caroliniana occurs in eastern North America from New Hampshire south to Georgia west to Alabama, Kansas and Missouri, and north to Ohio in the United States (FNA 2005). Range extent was estimated using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data collected between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024). See individual entries for distribution details about the three subspecies.
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are more than 600 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Silene caroliniana is potentially threatened by development, deer herbivory, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, succession, and other threats in some places (NatureServe 2024). However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
