Pinus monophylla

The treatment of Pinus monophylla by Kartesz (1994) - which this record represents - excludes variety 'fallax', which is placed instead in P. edulis (P. edulis var. fallax). Kartesz's (1994) perspective relative to 'californiarum' material is not clear, as he does not list Pinus californiarum as either an accepted or synonymized name. Pinus californiarum was first described as a species in 1987, so it is probable that Kartesz was not able to review this proposal in time to incorporate it into his 1994 checklist. Kartesz's (1999) Synthesis recognizes Pinus californiarum as a species distinct from P. monophylla, and moves 'fallax' material into P. monophylla (P. monophylla var. fallax). Perry (1991) states that P. monophylla is able to hybridize with P. juarezensis and P. quadrifolia (both of which occur in southern California and northern Baja California), but it should be noted that if P. monophylla and P. californiarum are regarded as separate species (as in Kartesz 1999), then it is only P. californiarum that could possibly hybridize with P. juarezensis or P. quadrifolia, since their ranges do not overlap that of P. monophylla sensu stricto. The extent to which P. californiarum acutally does hybridize with P. quadrifolia in the field is a matter of some question, at least in southern California (L. Merrill, pers. comm. 2009).

Found in US (California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona) and in Mexico (Baja California Norte).
