Stotler and Crandall-Stotler (2017) expand the concept of Porella platyphylla to include P. platyphylloidea, while Stotler and Crandall-Stotler (1977) treated them as distinct.

This species is found in western North America from Alaska, British Columbia, and Colorado, and is widespread in eastern North America from Quebec to Florida and west to Missouri; it is also common throughout Europe, northern Africa, and Asia (Stotler and Crandall-Stotler 2017).
