Carex straminiformis is common in California, scattered infrequently throughout Nevada, and is also known from Utah, north to Washington, Idaho, and Montana.
Range Extent Comments
Sierra Nevada of California and adjacent Nevada, north to the Cascade Region in Washington. Disjunct in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah, and in central Idaho; Shoshone, Lemhi, and Custer Counties (U.S. Forest Service, 1990). Five counties in Utah (Welsh, 1993).

Habitat

Subalpine and alpine areas on open slopes often near persistent snowbanks (U.S. Forest Service, 1990).
