Taxonomic Comments
Kartesz (1999) and FNA (vol. 26, 2002) elevate Platanthera orbiculata var. macrophylla (= P. macrophylla) to full species, therefore according to FNA, Kartesz's (1994) P. orbiculata var. orbiculata is equivalent to P. orbiculata.

Rank Reasons
Platanthera orbiculata is a wide ranging perennial herb in North America and Canada. It is common in several states and provinces. It is, however, rare throughout a large portion of its range, particularly near its southern limits.
Range Extent Comments
The taxon occurs throughout Canada, south along the Appalachians to South Carolina and Tennessee in the east and south to Washington (and formerly to Oregon) and to Wyoming in the west.
Threat Impact Comments
In the southern Appalachians, at the southeastern limit of its range, considered to be somewhat threatened by land-use conversion, habitat fragmentation, and to a lesser extent by forest-management practices (Southern Appalachian Species Viability Project, 2002), but pattern of threats not known for primary (Canadian) portion of range, where the species is generally not considered of conservation concern.
