Taxonomic Comments
Varies morphologically, and chemically. Further refinement of taxonomy is needed, Krog suggests it is a species complex in need of revision. See Krog, 1968, Macrolichens of Alaska, page 95; and Pike and Hale, 1982, Mycotaxon XVI (1):157.

This lichen has a forked distribution, occurring from Alaska south on the Pacific coast to northern California and from Alaska south through interior British Columbia to Idaho and Montana. It is widespread and conspicuous in sunny, open or partially shaded sites on coniferous bark.
