Taxonomic Comments
Based on phylogenomic analyses, Stout et al. (2022) place this species in the genus Miniellus. This genus change is accepted by Page et al. 2023. Has been placed in the genus Dionda by some (e.g., Smith 1979).

Disjunct populations in upper Red Cedar River system, northern Wisconsin; Mississippi River tributaries in southeastern Minnesota, eastern Iowa, southern Wisconsin, and northern Illinois; Ozark Mountain drainages (Mississippi, Missouri, White, and Arkansas river drainages) in southern Missouri, southeastern Kansas, northern Arkansas, and northeastern Oklahoma; and Boggy Creek system, Oklahoma (possibly extirpated); common, locally abundant, in south; uncommon in north (Page and Burr 1991).

Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Typically in clear, upland creeks and small to medium rivers with permanent, strong flow and gravel or rocky substrate; most often in protected backwaters near riffles, or in pools immediately below riffles where current slackens (Lee et al. 1980, Page and Burr 1991). Spawns in shallow (less than 20 cm) water over gravel, commonly over nests of Nocomis biguttatus, often in association with Notropis zonatus, with which it frequently hybridizes.

Reproduction

Spawns late April to early July with May-June peak in Missouri, May to July or August in Wisconsin. Sexually mature at age 2.
