Rank Reasons
Smilax glauca is a perennial vine occurring in dry to mesic forests and woodlands, riparian forests, old fields, pastures, hedge-rows, and roadsides in eastern North America from New York and Massachusetts west to Kansas and south to Florida west to Texas in the United States and Mexico. It is potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, and invasive species. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and over 3,000 occurrences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Smilax glauca occurs in eastern North America from New York and Massachusetts west to Kansas and south to Florida west to Texas in the United States and Mexico (FNA 2002, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024). Range extent was estimated to be 2.7 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 3,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Smilax glauca is potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Smilax glauca occurs in dry to wet forests and woodlands, bottomland and riparian forests, hardwood flatwoods, pine flatwoods, thickets, prairies, old fields, pastures, hedge-rows, and roadsides and is remarkable for its ecological amplitude (FNA 2002, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024).
