Taxonomic Comments
Kartesz (1999), Weakley et al. (2018), and Weakley (2023) recognize Salvia chapmanii as distinct from S. urticifolia. Weakley (2023) notes "records from further south represent S. chapmanii" In contrast, Kartesz (1994) included S. chapmanii in S. urticifolia.

Rank Reasons
Salvia urticifolia is a perennial herb endemic to woodlands and glades in the southeastern United States from Kentucky and Virginia south to Mississippi and South Carolina. Threats for this species may include development, fire suppression, and rights-of-way maintenance. Monitoring of populations should be conducted to improve our understanding of reproduction, plant abundance, threats, and trends, as well as continuing conservation measures to protect the species.
Range Extent Comments
Salvia urticifolia occurs from northern Virginia west to western Kentucky and south to South Carolina, central Georgia, and northwestern Mississippi, and potentially in Indiana, Maryland, and southern Pennsylvania (Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2023).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2023, it is estimated that there are 222 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Salvia urticifolia is potentially threatened by development, fire suppression leading to woody encroachment, and roadside or utility rights-of-way maintenance activities, though there is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand threats for this species.
