Rank Reasons
Circumpolar and circumboreal in the Northern Hemisphere, extending south to Mexico and Central America (Nash et al. 2002). In North America, this lichen species grows on old wood (fence posts, conifers, hardwoods) in open areas from the Upper Great Lakes, eastern Canada and New England; it also occurs southward in the mountains and foothills in Tennessee and North Carolina (Flenniken 1999). Bryoria furcellata is also known from Arizona and Chihuahua where it grows on Pinus and Pseudotsuga (Nash et al. 2002).
