Taxonomic Comments
Esslinger (2004, 2018) transfers Cladina stygia to Cladonia stygia; these represent the same concept for the element. Stable; closely related to the more widespread Cladina rangiferina. see Ahti and Hyvonen. 1985. Ann. Bot. Fennici 22:223, and Ahti, T. 1984 Beih. Nova Hedwigia 79:25-61.

This arctic-boreal lichen is most commonly found in bogs or other open wetlands from Alaska east throughout Canada and New England. Disjunctions are located north of the Columbia Basin region and also in the southern Appalachians.
