Diagnostic Characteristics

Plants perennial, perianth stipitate, plants tall and erect, leafy; perianth and achenes densely white- to silvery-tomentose (Correll and Johnston, 1970).

Habitat

Sandy soil mainly on the edges of pine and oak woodlands, calcareous clay or sandy soils (var. longifolium), limestone glades and exposed edges of limestone bluffs (var. harperi), dry sandy pinelands and scrub (var. gnaphalifolium).
