Rank ReasonsHoustonia procumbens is a perennial herb that is endemic to the southeastern United States where it occurs from southeastern North Carolina to southern Florida and west to southeastern Louisiana. It is common across much of the southeastern Coastal Plain.
Range Extent CommentsHoustonia procumbens is endemic to the southeastern United States where it occurs from southeastern North Carolina to southern Florida and west to southeastern Louisiana (Weakley and Southeastern Flora Team 2022). Range extent was calculated with GeoCAT using occurrence and photo based observation data (GBIF 2022, iNaturalist 2022, SEINet 2022, Bachman et al. 2011).
Occurrences CommentsBased on NatureServe Network occurrence data, herbarium records, photo-based observations, and anecdotal evidence, there are likely over 300 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2022, SEINet 2022, iNaturalist 2022, NatureServe 2022). It is common across much of the southeastern Coastal Plain (Weakley and Southeastern Flora Team 2022).
Threat Impact CommentsIn southeastern Louisiana, this species may be threatened by development pressure (C. Doffitt, pers. comm., 2022).
Ecology & Habitat
Habitat
This species grows in moist to wet sandy pinelands and on beach dunes (Weakley and Southeastern Flora Team 2022).
Reproduction
Houstonia procumbens is unique in that it has both heterostylous and cleistogamous flowers (Jones 2012).
