Rank Reasons
Castanea dentata occurs throughout eastern North America in Canada and the United States from Maine, Ontario, and British Columbia, and south to Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. It was once a dominant component of eastern woodlands but Chestnut Blight, caused by an exotic fungus, has diminished a once grand tree to shrubby stump sprouts. It persists, widespread and sometimes abundant as young shoots, but seldom reaches reproductive maturity before dying back from the blight. The species is very rarely reproducing sexually or spreading in any meaningful way, asexually. While the species persists, the central role it played as a food source and important resource for humans is no longer. There are efforts underway to breed and genetically modify the species for blight resistance.
Range Extent Comments
Castanea dentata occurs throughout eastern North America in Canada and the United States from Maine, Ontario, and British Columbia and south to Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi.
Occurrences Comments
Castanea dentata is still commonly seen as stump shoots in the Appalachians and elsewhere in the range.
Threat Impact Comments
Cryphonectria parasitica, the causal agent of Chestnut Blight, was introduced to New York City in the early 1900s. In 40 years, Castanea dentata was decimated, going from a dominant tree species of eastern forests to a shrub. The species rarely grows beyond a shrub or to reproductive status, as it again knocked back by Chestnut Blight. The roots of large trees, long gone, are not affected the fungus. Disturbance, like logging, tends to encourage shrubby growth from these roots (Burnham 1988, The American Chestnut Foundation 2020).
