Taxonomic Comments
Abbott's treatment in FNA (2021, vol. 10) and Kartesz (1994, 1999) recognize Polygala grandiflora as distinct from P. violacea, with Abbott accepting the move to Asemeia grandiflora and saying, "More work is needed to determine whether A. grandiflora should be treated as conspecific with A. violacea, as many other related entities are still recognized and no phylogenetic or populational data have been presented to show that this entity is unworthy of recognition." Weakley et al. (2024) say, "At a minimum, separation of Asemeia grandiflora from the "violacea entity" seems warranted, based on Pastore & Abbott’s (2012) rangewide study." Acevedo-Rodríguez and Strong (2012) include P. grandiflora in the synonymy of P. violacea.
