Diagnostic Characteristics

Plants not twining. Flowers in pairs terminating axillary peduncles and appearing later than the leaves, in the axils of the leaves of the current season. Corolla strongly bilabiate, the upper lip 4-lobed to a quarter or half it's length. Ovaries wholly or partially connate, glabrous.

Habitat

Bogs, swampy thickets and wet woods.

Ecology

Prefers highly acidic saturated soils and shaded sites.
