Taxonomic Comments
FNA (2006, vol 20) recognizes five varieties of Xanthisma spinulosum (gooddingii, paradoxum, glaberrimum, spinulosum, and chihuahuanum) and follows the transfer of this species from Machaeranthera. The treatment in Kartesz (1994) grouped the five varieties into two subspecies of Machaeranthera pinnatifida (pinnatifida and gooddingii).
