Rank Reasons
Alisma subcordatum is a perennial herb occurring in shallow ponds, stream margins, marshes, and ditches of North America, from Ontario east to New Brunswick, Canada south to Maine and Florida, west to Texas and Colorado, and north to North Dakota, and possibly Arizona and New Mexico in the United States. There are over 700 estimated occurrences of this taxon range-wide, which are potentially threatened by development, water diversion, alteration of hydrology, erosion, succession, recreational activities, and invasive species. Little is known about threats or trends, but with a large range extent and high number of occurrences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Alisma subcordatum occurs in North America from Ontario east to New Brunswick, Canada south to Maine and Florida, west to Texas and Colorado, and north to North Dakota in the United States (FNA 2000). There are also unconfirmed reports from herbarium specimens in New Mexico and Arizona (SEINet 2024). Range extent was estimated to be over 4 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be over 700 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Alisma subcordatum is potentially threatened by development, water diversion, alteration of hydrology, erosion, succession, recreational activities, invasive species, and other threats in some places, though there is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand scope and severity of threats for this species.
