Ecology & Habitat

Description

Dwarf Onion is a perennial herb, which is 3-5 cm high, and arises from solitary or clustered egg-shaped bulbs with brown or gray fine-textured coats. The 2 sickle-shaped, flat leaves, which are 2-5 mm wide and longer than the stem, arise from near the base of the stem. The pink flowers are borne on stalks, which are 7-10 mm long, in a hemispherical inflorescence, which is subtended by 2 papery, narrowly elliptic bracts at the top of the distinctly flattened stem. Each flower has 6 narrowly lance-shaped, petal-like tepals, which are 7-10 mm long, and 6 stamens, which are shorter than the tepals. The ovary has 3 rounded crests on top.

Diagnostic Characteristics

The flattened stem and fine-textured bulb coats separate this species from the similar A. SIMILLIMUM, A. TEXTILE and A. BRANDEGEI.
