Ecology & Habitat
Description
Dwarf Purple Monkeyflower is a small annual with branched stems that are up to 10 cm high. The opposite, narrowly elliptic leaves are up to 35 mm long and have petioles on the lower stem but are sessile above. Foliage is glandular-hairy. The paired, sessile flowers are borne in the axils of upper leaves. The glandular, tubular calyx is 5-8 mm long and has 5 pointed lobes. The magenta, tubular corolla is 10-25 mm long and 2-lipped with 2 rounded upper and 3 lower lobes. There are yellow markings near the throat of the tube. Numerous seeds are contained in a round capsule.
Diagnostic Characteristics
M. BREWERI is also an annual with purplish flowers, but its corollas are less than 10 mm long.
