Meacham. Synthesis of the North American Flora, Version 1.0. North Carolina Botanical Garden, Chapel Hill, N.C.
Taxonomic Comments
Kartesz's (1999) treatment of Arenaria kingii included A. fendleri var. glabrescens as part of A. kingii ssp. compacta, where the 1994 Checklist included it in A. aculeata. Kartesz (1999) also accepted subspecies kingii, plateauensis, rosea, and uintahensis. FNA (2005) moves the species to Eremogone and accepts 2 varieties: var. glabrescens, which includes all of the atypical subspecies accepted in Kartesz (1999), and var. kingii. It is difficult to say whether the concept of Eremogone kingii accepted by FNA (Vol. 5, 2005) is the exact same as the concept accepted for Arenaria kingii by Kartesz (1999). They seem to be the same, however, Kartesz (1999) reports Arenaria kingii for Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado, but FNA does not and does not mention what the reports of the species in these states might be instead. The FNA concept may be more narrow. Draft data from BONAP (June 2010) contains these same reports for Eremogone kingii var. glabrescens.

Diagnostic Characteristics

This species is difficult to separate from the more common A. CONGESTA and A. CAPILLARIS, but can usually be distinguished by the combination of sharp-pointed sepals and openly branched inflorescence.
