Taxonomic Comments
The Flora of North America vol. 5 concept of Eriogonum microthecum is similar to the Kartesz 1999 concept, however, Flora of North America subsumes E. phoeniceum into E. microthecum. Flora of North America vol. 5 also recognizes var. arceuthinum, var. schoolcraftii, and var. lacus-ursi. Note that the species epithet is correctly spelled "microtheca". "Nuttall used the epithet "microtheca" as a noun in apposition," and this spelling is, therefore, grammatically correct." Furthermore, an attempt to overturn the original orthography (Reveal and Gandhi 2014) was not recommended by the Nomenclature Committee for Vascular Plants (Applequist 2014)" (IPNI 2022, Tropicos 2022).
