Taxonomic Comments
Slotta (2012) recognized Malacothamnus palmeri var. involucratus, M. palmeri var. lucianus, and M. palmeri var. palmeri. Morse (2023) raises these to species level as M. involucratus, M. lucianus, and M. palmeri. In contrast, M. palmeri is treated in a broad sense, without varieties by Kartesz (1994, 1999) and Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2015).
