Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2006) recognizes Townsendia hookeri in a broad sense including T. nuttallii. Welsh et al. (2015) also recognize T. hookeri in a broad sense including T. nuttallii. In contrast, Kartesz (1994, 1999) recognized T. hookeri and T. nuttallii as distinct species.

Rank Reasons
Townsendia hookeri is a wide ranging perennial herb occurring in the western United States and Canada. With a large range extent, over 300 occurrences, broad habitat preferences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Townsendia hookeri occurs in western Canada and United States from Alaska south to British Columbia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan in Canada and further south to Utah, Colorado, and Nebraska in the United States. Range extent was estimated using herbarium specimens collected between 1992 and 2023 (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023, it is estimated that there are over 300 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023).
