Rank Reasons
Geum macrophyllum is a perennial forb occurring in meadows, stream banks, woods, thickets, muskegs, forest edges, clearings, coastal terraces, and roadsides of North America and Eurasia. There are estimated to be over 900 occurrences in its native range, which are potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, water diversion and alteration of hydrology, succession, and other threats in some places. Little is known about threats and trends, but with a large range extent, high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, Geum macrophyllum is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
The native range of Geum macrophyllum is in North America from Alaska throughout all of Canada, south through New York, west to Oregon, and the western and southwestern United States (FNA 2014, POWO 2025). It also occurs in Europe (potentially introduced) and Asia (POWO 2025). The native range extent was estimated using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1994 and 2025 and published distribution maps (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, SEINet 2025, FNA 2014, POWO 2025). See individual entries for distribution details about the two varieties.
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1994 and 2025, it is estimated that there are more than 900 occurrences in it's native range (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, POWO 2025, SEINet 2025).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Geum macrophyllum is potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, water diversion and alteration of hydrology, succession and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Geum macrophyllum occurs in wet meadows, on stream banks, in moist woods, thickets, muskegs, forest edges, clearings, coastal terraces, and roadsides (FNA 2014).
