Rank ReasonsMicranthes pensylvanica is a wide-ranging perennial herb in a variety of wetlands in northeastern North America from Ontario west to Saskatchewan in Canada and Maine west to Minnesota south to North Carolina west to Missouri in the United States. Threats include development, pollution, forest management, succession, deer browse, recreational activities, road maintenance, and invasive species. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and large number of occurrences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent CommentsMicranthes pensylvanica occurs in northeastern North America from Ontario west to Saskatchewan in Canada and Maine west to Minnesota south to western North Carolina, eastern Tennessee, and Missouri in the United States (FNA 2009). Range extent was estimated to be almost 2.4 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences CommentsBy applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 600 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact CommentsAlthough threats are not widely documented, this species is highly threatened by land-use conversion, habitat fragmentation, and pollution (sedimentation, runoff of pesticides and herbicides from Christmas tree plantations), and to a lesser degree by forest management practices (Southern Appalachian Species Viability Project 2002). Additional threats include by deer browse, succession, recreational activities, roadside maintenance activities, invasive species, and other threats in some places.
