Taxonomic CommentsA hybrid Phoxinus oreas x Semotilus atromaculatus has been recorded in the James River drainage, Virginia (Copeia 1992:548-553). Has hybridized with Phoxinus erythrogaster in Clark Creek, Wilkinson County, Mississippi (Grady and Cashner 1988). Also known to hybridize with Campostoma anomalum. Semotilus thoreauianus, formerly included in S. atromaculatus, was recognized as a distinct species by Johnson and Ramsey (1990). Range Extent CommentsRange includes most of the eastern United States and southeastern Canada, in the Atlantic, Great Lakes, Hudson Bay, Mississippi, and Gulf of Mexico basins as far west as Saskatchewan, Wyoming, and the Brazos River, Texas, but not including Florida and southern Georgia; isolated population in the upper Pecos and Canadian river systems, New Mexico; introduced elsewhere in the United States (Page and Burr 2011).
