Rank Reasons
Known from mountain ranges of southwestern Oregon and northern California, and eastern California and western-central Nevada. Threats appear to be low.
Range Extent Comments
"Found in three widely scattered areas of concentration: the high mountains of northwestern California and southwestern Oregon; the southern portion of the North Coast Range of California; and the Sierra Nevada of eastern California and west-central Nevada" (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2005).
Occurrences Comments
There are approximately 8 occurrences in Oregon (NatureServe Network Database as of July 2019). Based on specimen data, there are approximately 3 occurrences in Nevada (SEINet 2019). Not tracked in California but the Consortium of California Herbaria specimen database has 387 specimens, with at least 200 that seem unique (R. Bittman, pers. comm., 2019).

Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Habitat is gravelly to rocky or talus slopes, mixed grassland, buckbrush, manzanita, and sagebrush communities, and montane, subalpine, or alpine conifer woodlands (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2005). In the high mountains of northwestern California and southwestern Oregon and the southern portion of the North Coast Range of California, plants are frequently associated with serpentine soils (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2005). In the Sierra Nevada of eastern California and west-central Nevada, the species is found almost exclusively on granitic soils and infrequently on volcanic ones (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2005).

Ecology

The species is a food plant for the intermediate dotted-blue butterfly (Euphilotes intermedia) (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2005).
