Taxonomic Comments
Treated as Pyrola chlorantha by Kartesz (1994 checklist), but often called Pyrola virens in older North American literature, such as Gray's Manual (Fernald, 1950), which cites P. chlorantha as a synonym of P. virens, as well as in vol. 3 of the Michigan Flora by Voss (1996).

Rank Reasons
Pyrola chlorantha is a widespread perennial subshrub of coniferous and deciduous forests in subarctic and temperate biomes of North America and Europe. There are over 3,000 occurrences of this species, which are likely threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, recreational activities, invasive species, logging, climate change, and other threats in some places. Little is known about threats or trends, but with a large range extent, a high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, Pyrola chlorantha is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Pyrola chlorantha is a widespread species, found in subarctic and temperate biomes of North America and Europe (FNA 2009, POWO 2024). In North America it occurs throughout Alaska and Canada south to the western United States and northern Midwest east to Virginia and north to Maine (FNA 2009). Range extent was estimated to be 58 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be over 3,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Pyrola chlorantha is likely threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, recreational activities, invasive species, logging, climate change, and other threats in some places, though there is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand scope and severity of threats for this species.
