Taxonomic CommentsThis record is for the narrow treatment of Panicum capillare, excluding P. hillmanii as a distinct species, as recognized in Kartesz (1994, 1999). Freckmann and Lelong in FNA (2003, vol. 25) recognize P. hillmanii as P. capillare ssp. hillmanii.

Rank ReasonsPanicum capillare is an annual grass that is native across southern Canada, the continental United States, and Mexico, Burmuda, the Virgin Islands, and sporadically in South America, and is introduced to many areas around the world. With a broad distribution, high tolerance for disturbance, and no obvious threats, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent CommentsPanicum capillare is widespread in North America, from southern Canada, through the continental United States into Mexico, Bermuda, the Virgin Islands, and sporadically in South America (FNA 2003, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2025). It is also widely naturalized in Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand (GBIF 2025, POWO 2025). The native range extent was estimated to be greater than 12 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1994 and 2025 (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, RARECAT 2025, SEINet 2025).
Occurrences CommentsBy applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1994 and 2025, there are estimated to be more than 1500 occurrences across this species' native range (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, RARECAT 2025, SEINet 2025).
Threat Impact CommentsAlthough threats are not widely documented, Panicum capillare is potentially threatened by development, road maintenance, invasive species, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
