Taxonomic Comments
This record represents Ranunculus occidentalis in the broad sense, including R. hexasepalus as R. occidentalis var. hexasepalus following FNA (vol. 3, 1997). FNA (vol. 3, 1997) recognizes Ranunculus occidentalis var. dissectus, var. howellii, var. ultramontanus, and var. occidentalis as distinct varieties, in addition to three other varieties: R. occidentalis var. brevistylis, var. nelsonii, and var. hexasepalus. In contrast, Kartesz (1994) recognized R. occidentalis var. occidentalis in a broad sense including var. dissectus, var. howellii, and var. ultramontanus, recognized two other varieties (R. occidentalis var. brevistylis, var. nelsonii) and distinguished R. hexasepalus as a separate species.
