Taxonomic Comments
Kartesz (1994) treated Townsendia jonesii with three varieties distinguished (var. jonesii, var. lutea, and var. tumulosa) and T. aprica as a separate species. In contrast, Kartesz (1999) and Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2006) include T. jonesii var. lutea in T. aprica, thus the concept of T. jonesii is narrowed. Further information about the treatment in Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2006) is that T. jonesii var. tumulosa is included in T. jonesii (J.L. Strother, pers. comm., 2023) but no infrataxa are distinguished in T. jonesii.
