Rank ReasonsCarex nervina is a perennial graminoid in subalpine meadows, seeps, and streamsides occurring in the western United States from southwestern Oregon, western Nevada, and mountains of northern and central California. There are estimated to be over 81 occurrences which potentially face threats from development, succession, hydrological alteration, and invasive species. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered apparently secure.
Range Extent CommentsCarex nervina occurs in the western United States from southwestern Oregon, western Nevada, and mountains of northern and central California in the Klamath Ranges, High Cascade Range, North Coast Ranges, and High Sierra Nevada (FNA 2002, Jepson 2025). Range extent was estimated to be approximately 65,000 square kilometers using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1984 and 2025 (RARECAT 2024, GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, NatureServe 2025, SEINet 2025).
