Rank ReasonsEschscholzia caespitosa is an annual herb occurring in open chaparral, foothill woodlands, and valley grasslands from Oregon south to California, United States into Baja, Mexico. There are over 800 occurrences of this species, which are potentially threatened by development, right of way maintenance, invasive species, mining, fire, and succession. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent, large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent CommentsEschscholzia caespitosa occurs in western North America from Oregon south to California, United States and Baja, Mexico (FNA 1997). Range extent was estimated to be 358,279 square kilometers using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences CommentsBy applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 800 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact CommentsAlthough threats are not widely documented, Eschscholzia caespitosa is potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, mining, fire, succession, and other threats in some places (NatureServe 2024). However, they are considered negligible given the broad range and large number of occurrences of the species, and its somewhat flexible and abundant habitat, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
