Coffee Fern (Pellaea andromedifolia) occurs in western North America, in Baja California and Baja California Sur, Mexico and California and southwestern Oregon in the United States. There are estimated to be 2000 occurrences, including on various National Forests, other federal lands, and California State Parks. Loss of habitat due to residential development and urbanization is a threat.
Range Extent Comments
Coffee Fern (Pellaea andromedifolia) occurs in western North America, in Baja California and Baja California Sur, Mexico and California and southwestern Oregon in the United States. Range extent was estimated to be 490,000 square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023 (CCH2 Portal 2023, Flora of North America Editorial Committee 1993, GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, Villaseñor 2016).

By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023, it is estimated that there are about 2000 occurrences rangewide (CCH2 Portal 2023, GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023).

Habitat

This species is usually found on igneous substrates on rocky slopes and ledges, usually dry areas, also in chaparral and coastal sage scrub, at elevations ranging from 18 to 1500 meters (CCH2 Portal 2023, Flora of North America Editorial Committee 1993).
