Rank Reasons
Brodiaea terrestris is a perennial monocot occurring in coastal prairies, grasslands, foothill woodlands, in pine and mixed evergreen forests of western North America in California and Oregon in the United States. There are over 400 estimated occurrences of this species, which are potentially threatened by development, road maintenance, invasive species, wildfire, succession, and other threats in some places. With a large range extent, high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Brodiaea terrestris occurs in western North America in California and Oregon in the United States. Range extent was estimated to be over 350,000 square kilometers using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data collected between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024). See individual entries for distribution details about the two subspecies.
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are more than 400 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Brodiaea terrestris is potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, invasive species, wildfire, succession, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
