Taxonomic Comments
Solanum parishii Heller was described in 1906, as a replacement, species name for Parish’s variety name S. xanti var. glabrescens (Keil 2018). It has been been recognized by various authors as a species which occurs in southern California and adjacent Baja California, and separately, disjunct in northern California and southwestern Oregon (Kartesz 1994, Munz 1959, Nee 2012, Wiggins 1951). In 2013 it was listed as a synonym of a broadly described Solanum umbelliferum Eschsch. without recognition of any infrataxa (Knapp 2013). According to Keil, "It is quite possible that the northern California plants do represent a separately derived lineage of glabrescent plants that might warrant taxonomic recognition at the varietal level" (Keil 2018).

Rank Reasons
Solanum parishii occurs in western North America, in southern California and adjacent Baja California, and separately, disjunct in northern California and southwestern Oregon. Range extent was estimated to be 260,000 square kilometers. There are more than 500 occurrences, it occurs in dry chaparral, pine forests, and oak/pine woodlands, at elevation less than 2000 meters.
Range Extent Comments
Solanum parishii occurs in western North America, in southern California and adjacent Baja California, and separately, disjunct in northern California and southwestern Oregon. Range extent was estimated to be 260,000 square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023 (CCH2 Portal 2023, GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, Nee 2012, Villaseñor 2016).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023, it is estimated that there are over 500 occurrences rangewide (CCH2 Portal 2023, GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023).
