Rank Reasons
Strophostyles umbellata is a wide-ranging perennial herb or vine found in woodlands, savannas, flatwoods, clearings, old fields, roadsides, and other disturbed areas. It occurs in eastern North America, in the southeastern United States, from southern New York south to central Florida, and west to Missouri and Texas, and in Coahuila in northeastern Mexico. There are over 1100 occurrences, which potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, logging, invasive species, and other threats in some places. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and large number of occurrences, abundant habitat, and broad habitat preferences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Pink Wild Bean (Strophostyles umbellata) occurs in eastern North America, in the southeastern United States, from southern New York south to central Florida, and west to Missouri and Texas, and in Coahuila in northeastern Mexico. Range extent was estimated to be 2.9 million square kilometers, using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023 (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, SEINet 2023, Villaseñor 2016, Weakley and Southeastern Flora Team 2023).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023, it is estimated that there are more than 1000 occurrences of Strophostyles umbellata rangewide (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, SEINet 2023).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, this species is potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, logging, invasive species, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range and large number of occurrences.
