Taxonomic CommentsAccording to Buck and Allen (2004), when Nishimura monographed the genus Ctenidium in 1985, he restricted the use of the name C. molluscum primarily to European material and to material from Alaska; the eastern North America material was C. malacodes. In 1996 a paper by Pedano separated the material in eastern North America and South America into to separate species, the North American material being Hypnum subrectifolium; Buck and Allen, concluding that this author did not make a valid cominbation for the taxon in Ctenidium publish it as Ctenidium subrectifolium (Brid.) G. Pedano ex W.R. Buck & B.H. Allen, comb. nov.
