Rank ReasonsHackelia pinetorum (which is comprised of two varieties) is a moderately widespread taxon, with presumably more than 100 occurrences, known in at least 14 mountain ranges in three states in the U.S. (Arizona to Texas) and two states in northern Mexico (Baja California and Chihuahua).
Range Extent CommentsHackelia pinetorum occurs mostly in the desert mountains of the southwestern U.S. and adjacent Mexico, from Arizona eastward across southern New Mexico to Trans-Pecos Texas, and south to Chihuahua and northeastern Baja California in Mexico (Gentry and Carr 1976; Henrickson and Johnston, A Flora of the Chihuahuan Desert Region, in preparation).
Ecology & Habitat
Habitat
Hackelia pinetorum var. pinetorum occurs in moist shaded areas on wooded or forested slopes and in canyons in the mountains of the desert Southwest, at elevations between about 2000 and 3000 m (Henrickson and Johnston, A flora of the Chihuahuan Desert region, in preparation). Associated woody species include Pseudotsuga menziesii and various Pinus and Quercus species (Gentry and Carr, 1976).
