Rank Reasons
Calystegia silvatica is a perennial vine occurring in thickets, disturbed sites, banks, prairies, and roadsides worldwide in North America, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and other temperate regions. In North America, this species' native range is in the eastern United States, from Massachusetts and Vermont west to Michigan, Iowa, and Kansas south through South Carolina and Oklahoma. There are several thousand estimated occurrences of this plant rangewide, which are threatened in North America by rights-of-ways maintenance and construction, invasive plants, recreation, and succession. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent, tolerance of disturbance, abundant habitat, and broad habitat preferences, Calystegia silvatica is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Calystegia silvatica occurs worldwide in North America, Europe, Asia, New Zealand, and other temperate regions (FNA 2010). In North America, the native subspecies, Calystegia silvatica ssp. fraterniflora occurs in the eastern United States, from Massachusetts and Vermont west to Michigan, Iowa, and Kansas south through South Carolina and Oklahoma (FNA 2010, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2025). The Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2014) includes Calystegia silvatica ssp. orientalis as a synonym of C.s. ssp. frateniflora, and therefore reports this taxon's distribution as also occurring in Asia, China, and New Zealand, but others do not (for example, POWO 2025, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2025). The two additional subspecies, Calystegia silvatica ssp. silvactica and C.s. ssp. disjuncta are native to Mediterranean Europe, and introduced elsewhere, though sources differ on which subspecies occur where (for example, FNA 2010, POWO 2025). Range extent was estimated to be over 158 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data collected between 1994 and 2025 (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, NatureServe 2025, RARECAT 2025, SEINet 2025).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1994 and 2025, it is estimated that there are several thousand occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, NatureServe 2025, RARECAT 2025, SEINet 2025).
Threat Impact Comments
Threats to Calystegia silvatica in North America are not well documented but include rights-of-ways maintenance and construction, invasive plants, recreation, and succession (NatureServe 2025). There is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand scope and severity of threats for this taxon.
