Endemic to western North America, Umbilicaria angulata is found on very dry, exposed rocks from southern California to Alaska, reaching only barely into the Arctic. The lichen's distribution ranges east to Alberta and western Montana, although it is rare inland.

Endemic to western North America from southern California to Alaska, reaching into the Arctic only on Great Sitkin Island in the Aleutian Islands (Thomson 1984). East to Alberta and western Montana (McCune and Goward 1995).
