Esslinger (2018) transfers Fuscopannaria leucophaea to Vahliella leucophaea; these represent the same concept for the element.

This species has two centers of distribution: it ranges from British Columbia south to western New Mexico and from the Great Lakes region through the Appalachian range north to the island of Newfoundland. Disjunctions occur in Wyoming and South Dakota. This lichen typically grows in seepage areas on damp rocks in shaded habitats.
