Rank Reasons
Eupatorium pilosum occurs in the eastern United States, from New York and Massachusetts south to Florida and west to Louisiana. It is estimated that there are well over 400 occurrences rangewide. It occurs in ditches, along the margins of ponds, in low moist areas, fields, disturbed areas, and along forest edges, where threats include woody plant encroachment and closure of canopy gaps due to the absence of fire, mowing (and the absence of mowing to maintain early successional habitat), herbicide, invasive species, alteration of wetland hydrology, and deer browse. However, these threats are considered negligible given the species' broad range, preference for disturbance, and large number of occurrences.
Range Extent Comments
Eupatorium pilosum occurs in the eastern United States, from New York and Massachusetts south to Florida and west to Louisiana (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2006). Range extent was estimated to be 1.5 million square kilometers, using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data collected between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 400 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Threats to Eupatorium pilosum across it's range are not well documented, but include woody plant encroachment and closure of canopy gaps due to the absence of fire, mowing (and the absence of mowing to maintain early successional habitat), herbicide, invasive species, alteration of wetland hydrology, and deer browse (NatureServe 2024). However, their overall impact is likely negligible given species' broad range, large number of occurrences, preference for disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Eupatorium pilosum occurs in savannas, ditches, along the margins of ponds, and on low moist areas (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2006). It is associated with wetlands, but can also occur in dry habitats in woodlands and along woodland edges (Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024).
