Taxonomic Comments
According to the Intermountain Flora (1994), "If the plants here called A. norvegica var. saxatilis were treated as a distinct species, they would take the name A. arctica Less. [A. norvegica] consists mainly or wholly of two well characterized but confluent geographic varieties. North American plants belong to var. saxatilis, which also extends well into Siberia. Variety norvegica [is] of arctic Europe. Possibly one or more additional varieties should be recognized to provide for some of the high-arctic materials." Kartesz (1999) recognizes A. arctica only in North America, with three varieties (var. arctica, var. beringensis, and var. comata); he assigns A. norvegica var. saxatilis material to his A. arctica var. arctica. In Kartesz's (1999) treatment, A. norvegica Fries does not occur within the Synthesis range.
