Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2006) recognized Balsamorhiza macrophylla in a broad sense, including Balsamorhiza hookeri var. idahoensis. Kartesz (1994, 1999) recognized Balsamorhiza macrophylla and Balsamorhiza hookeri var. idahoensis as distinct taxa.
