Taxonomic Comments
Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2019) treats Penstemon secundiflorus in a broad sense with two varieties distinguished P. secundiflorus var. secundiflorus and P. secundiflorus var. versicolor. P. versicolor was described by Pennell in 1920. It did not appear, even in synonymy, in Kartesz's 1994 checklist or 1999 synthesis.
