Esslinger, T.L. and R.S. Egan. 1995. A sixth checklist of the lichen-forming, lichenicolous, and allied fungi of the continental United States and Canada. The Bryologist 98(4):467-549. As supplied by USDA, NRCS from The PLANTS database. National Plant Data Center, Baton Rouge, LA. Version: November 19, 1997.
Taxonomic Comments
Esslinger (2016, 2018) elevates Alectoria sarmentosa ssp. vexillifera (= A. vexillifera) to full species level, therefore A. sarmentosa ssp. sarmentosa here is equivalent to A. sarmentosa senso stricto.

Rank Reasons
Known from three continents; occurs in northeastern and northwestern North America (but probably extinct in southern California), Patagonia in South America, and central and northern Europe (Brodo et al. 2001, Nash et al. 2002). In western North America, it is more common in moist lowland forests along the coast and occurs less often inland (Nash et al. 2002).
